Summer Programs
Some academic departments at Columbia have created study abroad programs specific to their concentrations. These programs usually run in the summer and are open to all Columbia students. To find out more about these programs, reference the information below or contact the departments directly.

Columbia College Summer in Florence - Florence, Italy This summer program offers credited courses in several subjects which vary by year. These courses are taught by Columbia College faculty and are facilitated at the Scuola Lorenzo de' Medici, situated in the heart of historic Florence, Italy. Keep checking back for updates on this years program and course offerings. Fiction Writing and Marketing Communication: Prague Summer Abroad- Prague, Czech Republic The Fiction Writing Department of Columbia College Chicago is offering two summer session in Prague during the summer of 2008. Undergrads will take eight hours of Fiction Writing credit; Grads will take six. Courses are open to all Columbia students, and can be arranged for students-at-large and students from other institutions. In 2008, the Marketing Communication Department will also be offering a Marketing Case Workshop course during the first session-students interested in this six-credit course need to be admitted by the Marketing Communication Department Chair, Margaret Sullivan.

AEMM Foreign Distribution of Music- Cannes, France This course is designed to explore the international music business through attendance at MIDEM, the world's largest international music market. Students will research international music markets, publications, Web sites, etc., and identify companies that will attend the MIDEM conference held every January in Cannes, France. The identified companies will be contacted to introduce selected music projects when the students attend MIDEM. Coursework during the fall semester prepares students' design and practice effective techniques for "pitching" the selected music project.

J-Sessions
There are an increasing number of January courses (J-Session) that travel to such places as Austria, China, Mexico, and The Dominican Republic. To find out more about these offerings, reference the information below and consult your department or advisor by early October.

AEMM Reinventing the Continent: European Experiments in Arts Policy and Management- Vienna and Prague This course combines an intense arts management and cultural policy seminar with a complete cultural immersion. It will provide a unique overview of the history, evolution, and challenges of cultural policy and arts management in the European Union.

Study Culture and Art in Shanghai This course introduces modern Chinese history and art through Shanghai's important role as a sea port in the 19th century, as a city occupied by Western and Japanese forces in the 20th century, as the seat of the first Chinese Communist party, and as a contemporary art and business center. We will begin our discussion in Chicago during the first week of J-Term, and then depart for Shanghai . We will visit temples, tea-houses, Art Deco buildings and modern skyscrapers; talk to gallery curators, visit Modern Art Museums and art schools, as well as enjoy performances by cutting-edge musicians and dancers. Journalism department –Travel Writing: Honduras Visit the rainforests, reefs and ruins of Honduras. Hike through jungles and forests, swim in pristine waterfall pools, raft on white water rivers, explore the mysteries of the Mayan ruins, meet extraordinary local people dedicated to protecting their country’s flora, fauna and culture and write about it for newspapers, magazines and websites. Mexico: Schools, Language and Culture This program offers teacher candidates the opportunity to study at Kukulcan Language Community in Cuernavaca, Mexico, approximately 75 minutes south of Mexico City. The two-week experience is both personally and educationally enhancing for the teacher candidates. They live with a family, interact with students and teachers in private and public P-8 schools, bask in the sun during breaks in between Spanish grammar and conversation classes, attend dance, music and cooking lessons, and explore Mexico City, local art museums, as well as nearby archeological sites. During off hours, they practice newly learned phrases as they negotiate their way around the town. As a result of full participation, these future teachers receive one semester hour of credit and ten of the required field experience hours toward certification.

The Department of Liberal Education is pioneering the first semester long departmental program in Cuernavaca, Mexico. Please reference the information below and keep checking back for more updates.

Study Abroad in Cuernavaca, Mexico Students can take up to 18 credits. You don't need to already speak Spanish. Classes in Spanish will be offered from beginner to advanced level. Some classes will be offered in English as well. Live with a host family in a beautiful part of Mexico. Fall in love with this charming Mexican colonial town; plazas, outdoor music and friend people. Sponsored by the Department of Liberal Education and the Kukulcan Educational Community in Cuernavaca Mexico. Beautiful facilities and excellent accommodations. field trips to museums, Frida Kahlo and archaeological sites, etc. Fees will include tuition, room and board, some excursions and airfare.
