The Summer Session
All participants attend a six-week summer session at Columbia College. (Participants receive a stipend to cover the cost of transportation to and from the college and lunch is provided by the program.) The summer session, designed to simulate a college going experience, includes classes, tutoring, field trips, college visits, career exploration and a residential week. During the residential week students travel to a college or university outside Chicago where they live in dorms, attend their classes and participate in a variety of academic and recreational activities designed to enrich their educational experience. The summer session culminates with an awards banquet for students and their families.
Summer Internships
A limited number of internships are available to qualified students during the summer. Internships are designed to expose the student to careers that require a college degree in an area that they are interested in. In order to be eligible for an internship a student must have completed their sophomore year of high school, have been an Upward Bound participant for at least one full year, have a Grade Point Average of at least a 2.75 (preferably a 3.0), have excellent school and program attendance and have demonstrated the traits necessary for a successful internship experience such as punctuality, reliability, maturity and good communication skills. Interns are paid $300 a month for June, July and August.

The bridge program offers students one class for college credit and is designed to help students make the transition from high school to college. Tutoring, counseling, enrichment activities and access to all college facilities are special features of the summer bridge program.
