Interdisciplinary Arts and Media, M.F.A.

The Interdisciplinary Arts Department is for individuals with the vision to create and the motivation to succeed.  The program’s unabashed trans-disciplinary philosophy and highly structured curricular format represent the distillation of three decades of constant refinement.
The M.F.A. in Interdisciplinary Arts and Media fosters an innovative dialog between the media arts and the traditional fine and performing arts.  Guided by the department’s interdisciplinary emphasis, students begin by examining five major traditions in the arts: visual, sound, movement, literary, and dramatic. Students learn hands-on from artists and performers who themselves excel in their own art practice.  The program’s faculty is comprised of accomplished visual artists, composers, choreographers, writers, and media artists as well as nationally acclaimed visiting artists and theorists.
In keeping with the interdisciplinary spirit of this program, collaboration between students is greatly encouraged.  It is the opportunity to share ideas across various media that produces cutting edge individual and collaborative work.  This approach provides the conceptual and technical skills necessary to work in a variety of emerging forms such as video installation, interactive genres, and media-rich performance.  The studio and media core courses stimulate students to understand and use emerging technology with a personal vision and voice.
Students are immersed in a program of study exploring contemporary forms and practices, with emphasis on content, critical thinking, invention, and technique.  Artistic and critical skills developed during the MFA study prepare the students to produce original works that expand and advance the art form.  The culminating experience of the MFA program is the thesis project and exhibition.  Students create a body of work presented to the public as an exhibition or performance.
This comprehensive 60 credit hour MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts and Media is designed for students who have completed the BFA or BA.  The program seeks artist, writers, performers, composers, educators, and media artists with the passion to create and the desire to integrate media into their creative vision and practices.
