Once There Was and Once There Was Not
Photography, Undergraduate
Project Summary: Like many ethnic communities in the United States, the Armenians are faced with the possibility of their cultural identity being absorbed into homogenous American culture. This project documents the Armenian community's efforts to maintain its ethnic identity, cultural heritage, and collective memory through a series of images chronicling community life, religious ceremonies, businesses, schooling, and cuisine — telling a story of continuity and survival. The finished project includes more than two dozen black and white exhibition prints and an artist's book.
